We express a person’s inner world through the language of design, we shape spaces in the building of the future with an engineer’s precision.
Every project starts with a conversation, and through that we begin our ultimate goal: to deeply understand the person that has entrusted us with their home or workplace. We pay close attention to every discussion that is had, since we know that it is our job to usher out those true inner images, thoughts and desires held deeply within each person. Only then can we remove any unseen barriers so that we might achieve our clients’ most honest expectations. That’s why it isn’t only technical skill and creativity that allows us to succeed in our work, but a thorough understanding of human behaviour too. Through this we are able to craft a set of criteria and principles developed alongside our customers, and via the language of design are able to express the thoughts, feelings, moods, and human relationships manifested in their spaces. It is an experience that refines our clients’ vision and through that improves the quality of their lives.
Every house is a delicate fusion of its social, cultural and constructed environment. Our team ambitiously researches each project’s location for how this careful concoction can be brought together through both the environment and its history, from both an aesthetic point of view but also, crucially, from that of the client’s connection to the world. It is here that our muse is born; this is where the art of architecture begins.
Beauty originates from our firmly held values and how we relate to and connect to those values with subtle references. Our elegance comes from knowing when bold gestures are needed, and conversely understanding when finesse can beat out the grandiose. Our palette of design inspiration is broad, too, whether we are urged onwards by the geniuses of music, fashion, art and photography, find stimuli in contemporary and historical art and culture or reflect on the different movements in architecture and interior design.
The studio’s holistic approach is born from our founder and lead designer, whose attention to the post-functionalist Graz School of architecture is seen in the dynamic line layout and clear organic shapes of our houses. Through this we are merciless in our search for both harmony and contrast, until the right ratio is discovered and for this nature is often the greatest inspiration. We are only satisfied once a coherent narrative emerges from a project.
While the preferences of style differ from person to person, the essential task of any successful interior design is to ensure a smooth purpose. Function should not be at odds with its form, rather in harmony with it. We think beyond the limits of the room: we often rethink the floor plans, shatter the limits of the space and restructure the available square metres to craft an environment with refreshing new concepts for both utility and atmosphere.
We think of our style as open, free and without limits, but not without empathy for the client who we support from consultation through to the handing over of the keys. And often, even beyond that. We are convinced that a properly established space positively inspires you to do great things.
In homes, we foster a secure family life. In restaurants, we invite guests to new, authentic worlds. In workplaces, we study the workflows and conjure spaces that can inspire creativity in line with the brand’s identity.
Design isn’t for the present. The thinkers in our company are able to look 15-20 years into the future and through monitoring social and lifestyle trends are able to understand how the definition of a harmonious life changes over time. We see how human life becomes more flexible in time and space, and through that understand that the building of the future must match these ever changing values with remotely controlled intelligent systems capable of adapting to both the environment and the human.
The concerns of climate change have become tangible and people suffer from the struggling demands of raw material supplies. Meanwhile, construction is still responsible for a huge part of carbon-dioxide emission. But not in our company: for us, building passive, active and energy-producing houses has always made sense. Through our desire to build carbon neutral homes, we conduct intensive research into the technological requirements of a sustainable house. We ensure our buildings fit the criteria of green-building certifying bodies, such as BREEAM science-based certification system for sustainable built environment, or LEED green building certification scheme.
It has been a long time since we designed a house with piped gas, and instead of fossil fuels we focus on renewable energy. We work with solar cells, hydroelectric and geothermal systems.
Suitable room temperatures are provided by heating and cooling systems that operate with heat pump or air furnace and ceiling cooling. Fresh air is provided by using a recuperator (heat recovery) and simple ventilation systems. In our buildings, we store energy by using accumulators, and we recycle the waste heat and energy produced by cooling. We purify drainage through biological means.
The buildings should not only be green or sustainable but also resilient and able to protect the people inside. We use green walls to mitigate the heat within urban environments. Irrigation is managed by using greywater containers and groundwater.
And aside from using environmentally friendly and recyclable building materials, we keep track of the most up-to-date developments of the industry. We pay attention to space technology innovations such as the aerogel thermal insulation developed by NASA, nanotechnology-based ceramic insulation or the improvement of covers, coatings and devices capable of electrosmog shielding.
We are perfectionists. We start from a sketchy plan and follow that ever-organic process towards the more intricate design, where the tiniest details are developed with subatomic precision.
For us, “good” is not enough, and seek to iron out every crease in the plan. Whether our work is a small flat or a spacious office building, we are terrified by substandard results.
We treat our tidy laws with self-irony; the same way our coffee spoons and mugs rest in a perfect order. :-)
For us the biggest joy is when one of our projects is carried out to the highest standards. In these moments, we truly feel the perfection we always strive for.
