Renewal Instead of Demolition

Architect István Bényei, together with György Hoffmann and Ádám Szabó, created a studio out of an industrial ruin.

Respect for tradition and a forward-looking spirit – perhaps these are the two qualities that best describe the Bényei Architectural Studio. The building stands in the heart of the green belt of Budapest, on the slopes of the Buda Hills. István Bényei, the studio’s director, saw the opportunity to recreate a dangerously dilapidated industrial building, disfigured by extensions, and the hall, which was out of place, was not simply saved from destruction, but given a new lease of life. While respecting the original architect’s work, the transformation has created a clean, transparent, 21st century structure.
